Ecotourism
This means that our crew will focus on sharing the wonders of the environment with you through guided walks, talks and by practical hands on activities. As part of our accreditation in addition to providing guided eco activities we are committed to reducing the Carbon footprint in the following way:
- Water conservation
- We carry all water for the three day trip onboard the vessel. We strictly enforce the policy of water conservation. For example guests are allocated 2 minutes in the shower per day. When you leave the trip we hope that you will contemplate your own water usage at home and consider the benefits to the environment of cutting down consumption.
- Treatment of Waste water
- Sewage and effluent is held on board the vessel in specially developed holding tanks. The vessels have an on board sewage management plan. The flush on the toilets is set at a low rate to reduce the amount of water into the holding tanks.
- Energy efficiency
- The crew are encouraged to sail as much as possible which is an environmentally friendly mode of transport and also a lot of fun
- Noise limitations
- We offer our guests the opportunity to experience natural quiet when in the natural areas. The majority of time spent in transit is under sail which means that the natural quiet prevails during your marine park sailing experience.
- Minimal disturbance to wildlife
- The trip is vessel based so is transient throughout the Marine Park. We therefore have the ability to avoid disrupting wildlife by choosing the locations that we visit carefully. Our crew are trained to observe and report any areas which appear to have suffered harm and are instructed to avoid the location and report the findings to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. This allows us to avoid any ongoing erosion caused by our presence in the Marine Park.
- Contributing to conservation
- We contribute to the conservation of our natural area through a combination of hands on and in kind assistance. For example: Recycling, ecological research (for example turtle spotting and completing Crown of Thorns Starfish Reports) and being actively involved in the “Eye on the Reef” project with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
The Eye on the Reef project is the largest of its kind and relies on a strong relationship between GBRMPA and marine tourism operators such as ourselves and the reef research community. It is an ongoing exercise in collecting and documenting marine life, water temperatures and coral health.
- SV Whitehaven supplies all snorkelling equipment and endeavours to take you to all the top snorkelling destinations in the Whitsundays.
- All food is included.
- Government EMC or reef tax.
- Advanced eco accredited guided walks and talks.
- Permanent Shade large open decks.
- Spends at least 3 hours at Whitehaven beach.
We pride ourselves on the fact that we have no fixed itineraries for our scheduled departure cruises. The Whitsunday region is truly a sailors paradise with many islands offering endless shelter and snug anchorages. No two trips are the same as we sail from one idyllic island hideaway to the next.

Testimonials about the SV Whitehaven
SV Whitehaven Mar 2008
"Hey thanks heaps for a lovely trip. I finally got to see some nemo fish and the coolest parrot with a bump on the head. Awesome! And thanks for all the good food. Absolutely the best I've had on any boat.”

SV Whitehaven Mar 2008
The Whitsundays was a must see part of my visit to Australia. Not one person whom I have met had anything but positive to say about it. now I say the same. The "eco tourism" part of the boat was one of the reasons why I picked this particular trip. And the crew definitely lived up to the brochure details. Not only did they explain about the reef, islands but on our little bush walk, Andy was also explaining about the vegetation on the island. We saw more than I thought we would -sea turtles, maori rass, Bat fish, Reef Sharks, white breasted sea eagle, jelly fish, oyster catchers, white faced rock monkey (Andy!)The crew were really great and made the trip. Thanks to Zam for the great food./i>

This magic region will have you spellbound - pristine beaches, lush rainforests and dazzling waterways, in fact there are so many reasons why the Whitsundays is known as one of the greatest aquatic playgrounds on earth.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is the largest, most complex and diverse coral reef system in the world. It is made up of coral reefs, coral cays and islands, stretching along the Queensland coast from Cape York to Bundaberg. The Marine Park also includes seagrass, mangroves, sand, algal and sponge gardens, inter-reefal communities and other habitats, and many rare and endangered species. This underwater world makes for the best exploring above and below the water.
Whether you choose to bush walk, scuba dive or sail, there are a myriad of ways to explore the Whitsundays. Snorkel at Blue Pearl Bay where you will discover some of most amazing coral reefs and tropical fish in the Whitsundays. Dive the outer reef and explore the amazing coral. Walk along Whitehaven Beach's silica sand or kayak in turtle breeding grounds where you are sure to see one pop up. However you choose to spend your holiday the Operator will help you explore idyllic worlds that no cruise ship can.

Eco Friendly dive practices
1. Coral tissue is easily damaged, so don't touch any coral. Resist the temptation to touch other creatures. Some divers choose not to wear gloves, so they won't be tempted to grab the reef.
2. Passively observe organisms by floating in one spot Allow fish to swim past you.
3. Practice buoyancy skills in a pool or sandy area before diving near a coral reef.
4. Secure your gauges and equipment well to avoid accidental contact with the reef
5. Avoid swimming over the top of reef areas and try to remain in the sand channels between corals heads, which makes the contact with the reef much less likely.
6. Remain at least arms length from the reef unless your looking at something very carefully.
7. Avoid kicking up sand because this smothers corals when it settles and is stressful to other reef animals.
8. Always be aware of your body position in relation to the reef, especially your fins, and never stand on coral.
9. Avoid feeding reef fish. This may introduce unhealthy food items and disrupt their natural behaviour.
10. Don't collect souvenirs, including dead shells and coral rock because everything on the reef has a function and anything removed affects the reef ecosystem.
11. Use a camera to bring back memories to share, but keep a safe distance from the reef while taking pictures.
12. Encourage others to be aware of coral reef conservation and pass on your knowledge.
